Celebrating 30 Years of Transforming Futures: NTT DATA’s Saturday School Program

As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of NTT DATA’s Saturday School program, we reflect on the profound impact this initiative has had on thousands of young learners across South Africa. What began as a small grassroots project in 1995 with just 15 Grade 11 learners, has grown into a highly recognised, far-reaching corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. Today, it supports 100 learners annually in Johannesburg and an additional 46 in Gqeberha, with its reputation and success now acknowledged across the company’s global operations.

The idea for Saturday School was born out of a need to address the challenges faced by South Africa’s public school system, particularly in the fields of mathematics, science, and other critical STEM subjects. NTT DATA recognised that rural and township schools often lacked the resources and infrastructure to offer higher-level education in these vital subjects. The company wanted to be a part of the solution, ensuring students were equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue tertiary education and enter the workforce ready for success.

A Vision Realised

Alan Turnley-Jones, CEO of NTT DATA recalls the beginnings of the program. “Education in South Africa is incredibly important, and we recognised early on that we could play a key role in addressing gaps in education, particularly for learners pursuing STEM subjects. We wanted to help shape the next generation of young people who could contribute to the country’s growth and development.”

The program started humbly, but its success quickly became clear. With the commitment of both the learners and their tutors, the program expanded. Critical to the growth of the program has been working in close collaboration with the Department of Education. In addition to assisting to identify schools based on their performance and needs, the department also ensures that these schools work hand in hand with us, fostering a strong and enduring partnership.

NTT DATA currently partners with 32 government high schools and works alongside universities such as the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg and Belgium Campus, as well as numerous other institutions and organisations. These partnerships have helped ensure that the program continues to thrive and grow.

“The Saturday School is more than just a learning environment — It’s a community,” says Turnley-Jones. “It’s a space where students not only gain academic knowledge, but also learn the life skills needed to succeed in the world. The enthusiasm and dedication of the tutors and staff are what make this program truly special.”

Fostering Success and Innovation

The curriculum at Saturday School is designed to be as dynamic and engaging as the subjects it covers. Learners are offered quality education in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, English, Computer Studies, and Soft Skills. The tutors are skilled professionals who bring creativity and real-life connections to subjects that many students find intimidating. As a result, learners have consistently improved their performance, with many achieving distinctions in mathematics and science.

In 2018, the program incorporated coding, and the following year, robotics was added to prepare students for the rapidly evolving digital landscape. In 2021-22, Cybersecurity and IoT were introduced, and this past year, AI and Data Science were added to the curriculum. These additions ensure that learners are not only ready for university but are also prepared for careers in some of the most innovative fields.

The impact of the Saturday School is clear. Over 2,200 learners have passed through the program, with the Class of 2024 achieving a 100% pass rate. Many of these students have gone on to pursue degrees in fields such as business science, engineering, and medicine. Others have become entrepreneurs, starting their own businesses and contributing to the country’s economy.

Real Stories of Impact

The Saturday School program has not only transformed the lives of its learners but also the lives of those who have become part of it. Rochester George, a parent and NTT DATA employee, shares his gratitude, saying: “NTT DATA’s Saturday School was instrumental during my son’s Matric year. The support and resources provided not only helped him excel academically but also paved the way for his acceptance into the University of Cape Town. It truly made a significant impact on his educational journey.”

Ziphephezihle, a Saturday School alumnus from the Class of 2020, echoes this sentiment. “I recall stepping into NTT DATA for the first time with no idea of who I would become. Never did I imagine that I would be one of the top learners. The opportunity you gave me helped me become the first in my family to go to university. I’m incredibly grateful for that chance.”

A Sustainable Future

NTT DATA’s commitment to sustainable development is reflected in its long-term vision for its learners. Key to this is how the Saturday School has become a primary feeder for NTT DATA’s bursary program, which offers opportunities to learners who would otherwise have no access to tertiary education funding.

Launched in 2007, the bursary program has benefitted 230 learners, including those with disabilities and employees’ children. Currently, 59 ‘active’ bursars — meaning former students of our Saturday School program — are pursuing ICT-related qualifications at accredited universities, receiving full funding for tuition, accommodation, and living expenses.

In 2023, NTT DATA expanded its efforts with a new initiative in partnership with Yes4Youth. The program provides workplace experience to unemployed youth, and 65% of the cohort was absorbed into permanent positions—a testament to the program’s success in equipping young people with the skills and experience necessary for a successful career.

A Purpose-Driven Legacy

What sets the Saturday School apart from other similar initiatives is its alignment with NTT DATA’s business goals. “We’re a purpose-driven company,” says Turnley-Jones. “The Saturday School isn’t just a CSR initiative — it’s an investment in the future of the country and in our own business. We’re creating a sustainable pipeline of talent that will help us meet the demands of an increasingly digital world.”

NTT DATA employees also play a significant role in the program’s success. Graduate interns mentor Saturday School bursars, providing guidance and support throughout their academic journeys. Many alumni return to the program as tutors, coaches, and mentors, paying it forward and helping the next generation of students succeed.

As NTT DATA looks to the future, the Saturday School program remains a cornerstone of its CSR strategy. With its commitment to providing quality education and creating meaningful opportunities for young people, the program will continue to empower learners to shape their own futures and contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous South Africa.
