The joy of a staycation

In our fast-paced world, filled with constant travel and hectic schedules, we often overlook the hidden gems and unique experiences right in our own cities. The reality is, we don’t have to look or travel very far to get that change of scenery or break that we need. A staycation, a vacation spent in your own city, offers a refreshing change of pace, allowing us to rediscover familiar places with a fresh perspective.

Why take a staycation?

A staycation provides a much-needed break from the daily grind without the stress of having to travel very far for your holiday. By simply setting aside time to step away from work and routine responsibilities, you can carve out some time to unwind and recharge.

The perfect length of a staycation can vary depending on your needs and preferences, however three to four days away is a good balance between relaxation and exploration advises Setshego Ledwaba, Marketing and Communications Manager of Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre, Johannesburg, O.R. Tambo Airport. “It’s short enough to prevent you from getting restless or feeling like you’re wasting time and long enough to unwind. If you take a Friday and Monday off, it’s a four-day break to help you disconnect from your daily routine and recharge your batteries.”

It makes money sense

A staycation provides a budget-friendly break, allowing you to save on the often expensive costs associated with travel and accommodation while still getting the full experience. The money saved can then be used to indulge in luxurious experiences, such as spa treatments, gourmet meals, and all manner of spoils. It also means that you can plan multiple breaks in the same way, throughout the year.

Reducing travel-related emissions is also a significant way to contribute to environmental sustainability. Choosing a staycation allows you to minimise your carbon footprint and support local businesses. And, when you spend your vacation Rands locally, you’re directly contributing to the growth of your local community. From dining at local restaurants to shopping at independent stores, you’re helping to boost the economy of your area.

Plan for maximum enjoyment

Staying close to home is the perfect way to rediscover the beauty of your own city.

While a staycation can be spontaneous, planning an itinerary for your time off can help you to make the most of every moment, advises Ledwaba. Create a list of activities and attractions that interest you, then plan when you’re doing each so that you optimise your time off.

A staycation is an opportunity to explore your city like a tourist. Visit local museums, art galleries, and historical sites. Take a guided tour or simply wander through the streets, discovering hidden gems and unique neighborhoods. Step out of your comfort zone and try new experiences. Sign up for a dance class, attend a crafting workshop, or learn a new cooking skill.

“You want your staycation to be both memorable and rejuvenating. By stepping outside our comfort zones and embracing novel experiences, we can rejuvenate our minds, bodies, and spirits and have a much-needed mental break,” advises Ledwaba.

At the same time,it’s important to take time out to indulge in moments of relaxation, too. Book a soulful session, enjoy a leisurely meal at a restaurant, or simply relax with a good book. Do research on places close to you that offer a few amenities in one setting, so that a day visit there feels like a mini vacation.

A great example of this is the Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre, Johannesburg, O.R. Tambo Airport – a beautiful property that boasts a large spa with a full range of treatments such as a healing salt room, a heated indoor pool, and a champagne bar! There are also three restaurants and two chic bar areas on the property, making time spent there feeling like a resort-style break.

Set clear boundaries

The key to a relaxing and rejuvenating staycation is to make sure you are truly taking a break from work and daily home routines, advises Ledwaba. “Designate ‘holiday time’ by establishing specific start and end times for your staycation. This will help you to mentally switch gears and fully immerse yourself in relaxation mode.”

Pre-staycation prep is also important, as a staycation can also easily be derailed by household chores. Tidying up your home before your break starts or setting a strict “no-chores” rule during your time off can make all the difference. It will also be to your benefit to disconnect from work, adds Ledwaba. “Silence your work phone or email notifications to minimise distractions. If you must work, set aside specific times for work-related tasks and stick to them.”

Finally, concludes Ledwaba, embrace the moment. Practice mindfulness during your staycation by focusing on the present moment and savouring every experience. “And take photos! This is time just for you, so capture memories to cherish and relive the experience later.”
